Yoshino (吉野町) is a town located in Yoshino County (吉野郡), Nara Prefecture, Japan.  As of April 1, 2010, the town had an estimated population of 8,756 and a density of 91.5 persons per sq. km.   The total area was sq. 95.65 sq. km.
  Located in the northern portion of Yoshino County, the majority of the town is covered by mountains.  However, places along the Yoshino River (吉野川) are rather flatter than the other areas, where many roads, train tracks, and houses exist.  
  For adherents of Shugendo, Yoshino is the traditional beginning of the Mount Omine (大峰山) pilgrimage trail; however, many hikers to begin and end their trek from the Dorogawa (洞川) district of Tenkawa Village (天川村).
  Mount Yoshino is famous for its many thousands of sakura [Japanese cherry] trees.  These flowering specimen trees were planted in four groves at different altitudes, in part so that the famed trees would come into bloom at different times of the spring.  A 1714 account explained that, on their climb to the top, travelers would be able to enjoy the lower 1,000 cherry trees (下千本) at the base, the middle 1,000 (中千本) on the way, the upper 1,000 (上千本) toward the top, and the 1,000 in the precincts of the inner shrine at the top (奥千本).  (Referred to the site of "Wikipedia.")

Kimpu-jinjya Shrine

Kimpu-jinjya Shrine (金峯神社) is located near Oku-Sembon-guchi (奥千本口), Yoshino Town. It enshrines Kanayamahiko-no-mikoto (金山彦命), God of Mines and local god of Yoshinoyama. This place was a training center of mountaineering asceticism (修験道), full of mountaineering ascetics. Now it is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage. A popular tragic hero, Yoshitsune Minamoto (源義経, 1159-1189), then a most wanted criminal of the Kamakura Shogunate government, found shelter in a small hall here for a while (see below).

Saigyo's Hermitage

Saigyo's Hermitage (西行庵) is the place where the well-known poet monk Saigyo-hoshi (西行法師, 1118-1190) built himself a hermitage in Oku-Sembon, Yoshino Town. He served for Ex-Emperor Toba (鳥羽上皇) as a high-ranked Imperial Guard (北面の武士) named Norikiyo Sato (佐藤義清) until the age of 23 and suddenly entered the Buddhist priesthood. As a monk of the Shingon-shu sect (真言宗) of Buddhism, he traveled over the provinces and solicited contributions for pious purposes, writing numerous tanka poems.

Yoshino-Mikumari-jinjya Shrine

Yoshino-Mikumari-jinjya Shrine (吉野水分神社), is located at 1612 Yoshino-yama, Yoshino Town (吉野町吉野山1612). Although the foundation date is unknown, it enshrines Ame-no-Mikumari-no-Omikami (天之水分大神), the God of Distributing Water as the main god, Takamimusubi-no-kami (高皇産霊神), Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名彦神), Miko-gami (御子神), Amenigishikuninigishi-Amatsuhikohikohononinigino-mikoto (天津彦火瓊瓊杵命), Tamayori-hime (玉依姫命) and Takuhatachiji-hime-no-mikoto (天萬栲幡千幡比�v命). It has been also believed as a god of Blessing with Children (子授けの神) because the word "mikumari" sounds like another word "mikomori/mogomori" (身籠もる: to become pregnant). The present shrine buildings were built at the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi (豊臣秀吉) in the late sixteenth century.

Too-zan Chinka-in Nyoirin-ji Temple

Too-zan Chinka-in Nyoirin-ji Temple (塔尾山 椿花院 如意輪寺) was founded by Nichizo-shonin (日蔵上人) in the 3rd year of Engi (延喜3年) or AD 904. As a temple of the Jo-do-shu (浄土宗) sect of Buddhism, it is dedicated to "Nyoirin-Kannon" (如意輪観音: Cintaman Cicakra). The temple is famous for the stories of Emperor Godaigo [Takaharu] (後醍醐天皇 [尊治]; 1288-1339; r.131-1339) and his faithful retainer Masatsura Kusunoki (楠木正行, 1326-1348).Their address is 1024 Yoshino-yama, Yoshino Town (吉野町吉野山1024).

Yoshimizu-jinjya Shrine

Yoshimizu-jinjya Shrine (吉水神社) was a Buddhist temple called "Yoshimizu-in" (吉水院), or more precisely a monk residence of Kimpusen-ji Temple (金峰山寺). Once Yoshitsune Minamoto (源義経) and his lady Shizuka-gozen (静御前) secretly stayed for a while in 1885 (文治元年). Later it was a temporary palace of Emperor Godaigo (後醍醐天皇) in 1336 (延元元年). Hideyoshi Toyotomi (豊臣秀吉) visited here on the occasion of cherry-blossom viewing in 1594 (文禄3年). Now the shrine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Kokujiku-san Kimpusen-ji Temple

Kokujiku-san Kimpusen-ji Temple (国軸山 金峯山寺) is located in Yoshino-yama, Yoshino Town (吉野町吉野山). It is the head temple of Kimpsen Shugen-honshu sect (金峯山修験本宗): It is a unique religion of mountain worship, different from Buddhism and Shintoism. It was founded reportedly by En-no-Ozunu (役 小角, 634?-706?), also known as En-no-Gyojya (役行者) in the late seventh century. It is dedicated to Zao-Gongen (蔵王権現). Around this place stood the Imperial Palace of the Southern Dynasty (南朝皇居跡) between 1336 and 1392. It is now a part of the UNEXCO World HEritage.
