(Monday 16 March) The monuments commemorating Basho Matsuo's visit on the 14th day of the 8th month of the 2nd year of Genroku (元禄2年8月14日) in the lunar calendar or Sept. 27, 1689 AD, Kehi-jingu Shrine, 1--68 Akebono-cho, Tsuruga City.  Basho came here with Tosai Kambe (神戸 洞哉), Fukui and spent two days here until Sept. 28, 1689.  On Sept. 27, 1689 (元禄2年8月14日), Basho reportedly made fifteen haiku poems.  One of them was dedicated to the famous monk Yugyo-shonin (遊行上人: 一遍: Ippen, 1239-1289) who founded the Ji-shu sect (時宗) of Buddhism:

  Tsuki kiyoshi (月清し)
  Yugyo no moteru (遊行のもてる)
  Suna no ue (砂の上)
  (The pure moonlight
  Is shining on the sand
  Brought by Yugyo.)

Next day, Basho could not leave here because of hard rain.  So he made the following poem:

  Meigetsu ya (名月や)
  Hokko-biyori (北国日和)
  Sadame-naki (定なき)
  (Alas!  The full moon.
  The north land weather
  Is hard to forecast.)

Kanegasaki Castle Remains
Kanegasaki Castle (金ヶ崎城) was located in Kanegasaki-cho, Tsuruga City or on Hill of Kanegasaki (金ヶ崎山, 86 m high).  During the Gempei Wars (源平合戦) in the late twelfth century, Michimori Taira (平 通盛) built the first castle on the preparation of the battle with Yoshinaka Kiso (木曽義仲).
In 1336 (延元元年/建武3年10月13日) Yoshisada Nitta (新田義貞), together with Prince Tsuneyoshi (Tsunenaga: 恒良親王, 1324-1338) and Prince Takayoshi (Takanaga: 尊良親王, 1310-1337), entered the castle.  However, they were soon besieged by the Ashikage troops (足利軍) and deprived of the supply of food.  In 1337 (延元2年/建武4年2月5日), Yoshisada's group extricated themselves out of the castle at night and tried to rally the troops at Somayama Castle (杣山城).  Eleven days later, Yoshisada's army attempted to relieve Kanegasaki Castle but they were interfered by the Ashikage troops by the Ashikaga army.  On March 3 (in the lunar calendar),when the Ashikaga troops attacked, the 300 men including Kanegasaki, Prince Takayoshi and Yoshiaki Nitta (新田 義顕, 1318-1338), the 1st son of Yoshisada, made fire in the castle to commit suicide.  Prince Tsuneyoshi was captured and the castle finally surrendered.
In the late fifteenth century, the Asakura clan (朝倉氏) ruled this area.  On April 20, 1570 or in the 1st year of Genki (元亀元年), the 30,000 allied army of Nobunaga Oda and Ieyasu Tokugawa left Kyoto for conquering Echizen Province (越前).  The allied army first predominated over the Asakura troops.  However, once Nagamasa Asai (浅井長政), a brother in law of Nobunaga betrayed them, the complexion of the war dramatically turned out to be very bad for the allied army: They needed to disengage from here immediately.  Fortunately the regiment was well officered, so they managed to evacuate from here with the minimum victims.

(Monday 16 March) The Basho Matsuo Monument of Seiho-zan Konzen-ji Temple, 2-2 Kanegasaki-cho, Tsuruga City.  On Sept. 28, 1689 (元禄2年8月15日), Genryu Tenya (天屋 玄流), et. al. took Basho to this temple in rain.  Basho was reportedly interested in the story of Kanegasaki Castle between 1336-1337, especially Battle of Engen (延元の戦い, 1336-1337) and the story of the Jin-sho (陣鐘の物語, 1337),  then he made a haiku poem:

  Tsuki itsuko (月いつこ)
  Kane ha shimoru (鐘は沈る)
  Umi no soko (うみのそこ)
  (Where is the moon?
  The bell submerged
  On the sea bottom.)

Seimei-jinjya Shrine
Seimei-jinjya Shrine (晴明神社) is located at 8-21 Aioi-cho, Tsuruga City (福井県敦賀市相生町8-21).  Seimei Abe was a legendary A Chinese-style diviner (fortune-teller) who lived between 921-1005.  He was a practitioner of Onmyo-do (陰陽道) which literally means "the way of yin and yang": a form of Japanese occultism deeply influenced by esoteric Taoism.  He reportedly stayed in Tsuruga between 990 and 994.  At that time Tsuruga was an important port to trade with China.
