Grafton Street

Grafton Street (Irish: Sraid Grafton) is one of the two principal shopping streets in Dublin city centre, the other being Henry Street.  It runs from St. Stephen's Green in the south to College Green in the north.
The street was named after Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton, the illegitimate son of Charles II of England who owned land in the area.  The street was developed from a then existing country lane by the Dawson family in 1708, after whom the parallel Dawson Street is named.
Buskers, including musicians, poets and mime artists commonly perform to the shopping crowds.  This scene was portrayed in the 2006 film Once, starring Glen Hansard of The Frames, a former Grafton Street busker, and Marketa Irglova, a Czech musician and actress.  (Referred to the site of "Wikipedia")

Thomas Cook workers punished while white collar crime continues to be rewarded

August 4, 2009

Speaking today as workers employed by Thomas Cook were arrested for standing up for their rights Dublin Sinn Fein TD Aengus O Snodaigh said the distorted priorities of the Irish judiciary and the Garda Siochana speak volumes for how this country has gotten into such deep recession.  (Quoted from the site of "Sinn Fein")

National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts and History

National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin 7.  When I visited, they had a special exhibition of "A Dubliner's Collection of Asian Art: The Albert Bender Exhibition."

Albert M. Bender (1866-1941) was born in Dublin, and emigrated to San Francisco where he became one of the most successful insurance brokers on the west coast of the United States.  He became interested in Asian art.  In honour of his mother, Augusta Bender, he donated some 260 artefacts of mostly Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan origin to the National Museum of Ireland between 1931 and 1936.  (Referred to the official site of the exhibition)
It is a wonderful collection indeed!  A must-see for Asian art lovers.
