Jindrichuv Hradec, South Bohemia

Post-Conference Tour Day 2

30 July 2005

Jindrichuv Hradec (pop 21,800, 2004) with its ancient historical centre was once one of the largest towns in Bohemia.  The local castle, which was established in the first half of the 13th century, was built on the site of an earlier fortress.  Its fate has been connected with the well-known houses of the Lords of Hradec, Slavet and Cernin.
The chateau and the preserved sections of its battlements bear the witness to its complicated structural development, but also to the sumptuousness of this seat of the Renaissance aristocrats.  Several sightseeing trails lead to the Gothic palace, the Renaissance palace, the Black kitchen and other areas.  The castle tower and the small chateau garden with its rondel are also open to the public.  The Nezarecka from 1595-1605 and the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene (kostel sv. Mari Magdaleny) are situated opposite the museum.
The tower of the Church of Saint John the Baptist (kostel sv. Jana Krtitele) dating back from the 13th and 14th centuries towers over the town's roofs (the tower is open to the public).  A geographical curiosity is the fact that the 15th meridian line is marked on the paving next to the church.  The town's natural centre is formed by the square with the Baroque Column to the Holy Trinity (sloup Nejsv. Trojice) and the many historical burghers' houses that are situated in the surrounding alleyways.  The Minorite monastery with the Church of Saint John the Baptist (kostel sv. Jana Kritele) are worth seeing as their architecture and internal painted decorations rank them among the jewels of Gothic art.  On the way to the railway station, there lies the late Gothic Franciscan monastery, which is connected by a covered cloister to the former hospital and the seat of the widows of the Lords of Hradec, the so-called Klastericek (Little Convent).
