Ceske Budejovice, South Bohemia
Post-Conference Tour Day 1-Day 2

29-30 July 2005

Ceske Budejovice (pop. 99,700, 2004) jostles with Plzen in the practically religious struggle to produce the Czech Republic's best beer, rising to notoriety as the birthplace of the original Budvar (Budweiser) and still prized as the home of one of Europe's finest tipples.
Like Plzen, South Bohemia's capital is a vibrant city, big enough to escape the more touristy "toy town" attributes of nearby Cesky Krumlov, but still small enough to escape ensure that its pretty old heart isn't choked by the industry on its boundaries.
More green than grey, the region's biggest city is a patchwork of tight alleys, broad parks and gaping squares, offering a slightly scruffy - and reliable rowdier - take on the country's perennial old town blueprint.  It may still have the air of an overgrown village, but after an overdose of South Bohemian rusticity this is the place to indulge in a shot of (quietish) urban living and a sample or two of South Bohemia's amber aqua vitae.

HISTORY

The marshy site, ideal for the defense of a mediaeval fortress, was selected by King Premysl Otakar II in 1265 as a royal town and a bulwark against powerful local families.
Its ancient predecessor, the village of Budivojovice, was at the present site of the Church of St. Procopius & John the Baptist (Kostel sv Prokopa sv Jana Krtitele), north of the centre in the suburb of Prazske sidliste.  As old as the town are the Dominican Monastery and Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin, and namesti Premysla Otakara II.
By the 14th century Ceske Budejovice was the most powerful town in Southern Bohemia.  Its many fine Renaissance buildings testify to its wealth from trade and silver mining.  It remained staunchly royalist and Catholic during the Hussite Wars, though it was never attacked by Hussite armies.  The royal mint was established here in the late 16th century.
Prosperity continued until the Thirty Years' War, when a disastrous fire (in 1641) destroyed half the town.  The silver also began to run out and the royal mint was closed.
Ceske Budejovice only began to recover with the establishment of a major school in 1762 and a bishopric in 1785.  Industry arrived in the 19th century.  The first railway train on the continent rode out from here to Linz, Austria, in 1832.
After WWI the southern part of South Bohemia was given to Czechoslovakia, although over half of its population was German.  Though Germans and Czechs had coexisted peacefully here for centuries, the Germans were nevertheless all expelled from Ceske Budejovice in 1945.
