Cesky Krumlov, South Bohemia

Post-Conference Tour Day 1

29 July 2005

Cesky Krumlov (pop. 14,570, 2004) is one of the best preserved historical towns in Bohemia and it has been entered into the UNESCO world cultural heritage list in 1992.  The local castle was the seat of the House of Vitkovec from the time it was established and it especially served the most significant branch of this family, the Lords of Rozmberk.  In 1602, the Emperor Rudolf II purchased Krumlov.  Thereafter, it belonged to the House of Eggenberg and finally to the House of Schwarzenberg.
The expansive area of the aristocratic seat (the castle was gradually reconstructed to a more comfortable chateau) is divided into several sections spread out on a cliff above the Vltava River.  The oldest part is the so-called Small Castle (Hradek) with its high accessible tower, the facade of which is decorated with restored Renaissance paintings.  The Upper Castle (Horni Hrad), which offers a number of sightseeing trails, lies slightly higher.  A unique, multi-storeyed covered bridge (Plastovy Most) leads from the back of the castle across a moat and into the chateau park.  The upper covered level of the bridge connects the chateau with the Baroque chateau theatre, which is a true European rarity thanks to its preserved facilities.
An alley known as the Latran, leads along the opposite side of the chateau and it is home to a number of historical houses, the Renaissance Budejovice Gate (Budejovicka brana) and the former Minorite monastery connected with the convent of the Order of Saint Claire, which was established in 1350.  When stepping onto the bridge, it is not possible to overlook the tower of the closed Chapel Church of Saint Jost (Kostel sv. Josta).  The inner town lies within a bend of the Vltava River and it includes picturesque alleyways with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque burghers' houses.  The natural centre of the town is formed by the sloped square and the Renaissance town hall dating from the second half of the 16th century.  Not far away, the stately Gothic structure of the Church of Saint Vitus (Kostel sv. Vita) dating from 1407-1439 towers over the river. (Daniel Kovar, South Bohemia: Castles and Chateaux, Historical Towns, Culture and Nature, Ceske Budejovice: Unios CB, spol. s r. o., 2002)

Krumlov Chateau

The original castle was said to have founded by the Vitkov family from South Bohemia in the 13th century.  In the early 14th century it was owned by the Rozemberk family and the castle town greatly prospered.  In the 16th century the castle and the town developed to the present shape as a Renaissance city.  However, as the ownership of the castle had been transferred to the Eggenberg family and then to the Schwarzenberg family, the castle and the town were backward in modernization and gradually declined.  The resent-day castle is the outcome of hundreds of years of development.  The original Gothic castle was enlarged and updated by its numerous owners, who adapted it to their requirements.  The area of the castle has remained unchanged since the end of the 16th century.
