Tours: miscellanea

Tours City (pop. c.298,000) has the cosmopolitan, bourgeois air of a miniature Paris, with wide eighteenth century avenues, formal public gardens, cafe-lined boulevards and a thriving university with 25,000 students.  Graced with imposing public buildings in the purple classical style and an atmospheric old city, it's both elegant and self-confident, and thus, in its inimitable way, quintessentially French.  The French spoken in Tours is said to be the purest in France.
Thanks to the spirit of the eighteenth century, Tours is efficiently laid out,  Its focal point is semicircular place Jean Jaures, where the city's major thoroughfares -- Rue Nationale, Boulevard Heurteloup, Avenue de Grammont and Boulevard Beranger -- meet, Champs-Elysees-style, at a flowery fountain.  The train station is 300 m east of Place Jean Jaures.  The old city is centered on Place Plumereau, which is about 400 m west of Rue Nationale.  The northern boundary of the city is demarcated by the River Loire, which flows roughly parallel to the River Cher, 3 km to the south.  (Main reference: Lonely Planet France.  7th edition.  Lonely Planet Publications Pty Ltd, 2007.)

Tours Giraudeau
Hotel Tours Giraudeau, 247 Rue Giraudeau, Tours 37000, France.  I could find a plaque of "Hotel de Tourisme" but it is probably equivalent to two- or three-star hotels.
This is the hotel I stayed between 14 and 21 June 2008 (7 nights) during the XXIst International James Joyce Symposium.  Not bad and very comfortable for me with many Japanese tourists because the hotel has a special contract with some major Japanese tourists agencies.  However, it is about 35 minutes walk to the VINCI Centre International de Congres de Tours.  So I didn't dare to come back from the venue for taking a rest in the daytime.

Jeanne d'Arc
Hotel Robin-Quantin a Tours (au 2eme plan).  La maison de Jenne d'Arc a Tours.  Off Place Plumereau.  In 1429, after the historical approval by the Royal Council, Jeanne d'Arc was sent to this town of Tours where her war banners were made at the cost of 25 livres-tournois for a standard and a pennon showing an angel presenting a lily to the Virgin Mary.  With the hospitality of Jean Dupuy, a burgess of Tours, Jeanne d'Arc stayed at this house and was ready to fight for the people of France against England.
