Szarvas and Opusztaszer
Post-Conference Tour Day 1

Szarvas is a pretty, green town 45 km northwest of Bekescsaba on a backwater of Koros River ("Holt-Koros").  Szarvas was a market town that also suffered decimation under the Turks; Slovaks came here in large numbers late in the eighteenth century.  But the best thing that ever happened to Szarvas was the arrival of Samuel Tessedik, a Lutherian minister and pioneering scientist who established one of Europe's first agricultural institutes here in 1770.  Szarvas' big draws are water sports on the Holt-Koros, and the town's arboretum, easily the best in Hungary.  (Steve Fallon & Neal Bedford Hungary 309)

In Opusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park ("Opusztaszeri Nemzeti Torteneti Emlekpark" commemorates the single most important event in Hungarian history: the honfoglalas, or 'conquest,' of the Carpathian Basin by the Magyars in 896.  Contrary to what many people think (Hungarians included), the park does not mark the spot where Arpad, mounted on his white charger, first entered 'Hungary.'  That was actually the Munkacs Valley, Hungarian territory until after WWI and now Ukrainian territory.  But according to the twelfth-century chronicler known as Anonymous, it was at this place called Szer that Arpad and the six clan chieftains, who had sworn a blood oath of fidelity to him, held their first assembly, and so it was decided that a Millennium Monument would be erected here in 1896.  (Scholars had actually determined the date of the conquest to be between 893 and 895, but the government was not ready to mark the millenary anniversary until 1896.)  Situated atop a slight rise in the Great Plain about a kilometer from the Szeged road, the park is an attractive though somber place.  (Steve Fallon & Neal Bedford, Hungary, 300-1)
