2004 International Conference
on James Joyce and the Humanities
Seoul National University/ Soongsil University, Seoul, Korea
23 - 26 November 2004

A Decentered Universe of Joycean Studies: Seoul 2004

The James Joyce Society of Korea (JJSK) and the Institute of Humanities of Seoul National University (IHSNU) jointly held the 2004 International Conference on James Joyce and the Humanities at Seoul National University and Soongsil University between 23-26 November, 2004.  Six speakers came from Korea, three from Japan, two from the United States, one from Ireland, and one from Taiwan.  The Conference was divided into five sessions.  Presentations in Session 1, titled "Issues of the Humanities Studies: Literature, History, and Imagination" were given in Korean and had no direct bearing on Joycean themes except tangentially.  The other four sessions were Joycean as the session titles show: Session 2: Joyce in Perspective (presented by Margot Norris, Shin Kikkawa and Kiljoong Kim); Session 3: Joyce in Cultural Context (Emer Nolan, Morris Beja and Shigeo Shimizu); Session 4: Translating and Internationalizing Joyce (Chongkeon Kim, Eishiro Ito and Taeun Min); Session 5: Aspects of Joycean World (Emer Nolan, Yu-chen Lin, Margot Norris and Morris Beja).   On Thursday, November 25, the day-off, the participants enjoyed the tour to Yoeju and Icheon (both famous for ceramics) in the heart of Korea. We visited Silleuk-sa Temple, a ceramics museum and the Royal Mausoleum of King Sejong (the most popular Korean king who created Hangul, the Korean alphabet).  In the evening, we were invited to the reception hosted by SNU President and His Excellency Ambassador of Ireland Paul A. Murray.  We had a great time talking, singing, reading, eating and drinking Guinness, etc.
One unique "device" introduced for non-native speakers of English was a booklet filing all the speakers' papers, which circulated to each participant: all the speakers were required to submit their papers one month before the conference.  The booklet greatly helped the audience's better understandings, although most speakers inserted some new passages and corrected some parts in their presentations.  Also, they employed a unique system of discussion: at least one discussant took charge of each presentation, so each speaker could receive at least one comment.  Of course many speakers received much more.
Probably this conference was the first attempt of organizing an international Joycean conference in East Asia: It resulted in great success in virtue of untiring diligence of the organizing committee and members of the James Joyce Society of Korea with many students' assistance.
