The Japanese Centenary Bloomsday

The Cultural Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs, together with Irish Embassies around the world, and in association with universities and culture centres, has organized an exhibition entitled "International Joyce" on the life and works of James Joyce. It includes two Japanese universities: Waseda University (Tokyo), June 22-July 2, 2004 and Aichi Shukutoku University (Nagoya), June 9-16. During the Nagoya exhibition Prof. Kazuhiro Doki, Aichi University of Education, gave a lecture entitled "James Joyce and Madame Butterfly" on June 12.

The James Joyce Society of Japan had its annual conference at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo between 26-27 July, 2004. About 60 members (out of 120) participated in the conference this year and discussed James Joyce's works enthusiastically in each session. Most participants moved to the Embassy of Ireland Residence to attend the Centenary Bloomsday Reception. His Excellency Ambassador of Ireland Padraig Murphy made a speech about Joyce and his father: he intensified that Joyce's works reflect his father (ex. Gabriel's speech in "The Dead"). Prof. Shigeo Shimizu, the president of the Japanese James Joyce Society, made a speech in Irish. The guests also enjoyed the 5-minute cartoon film "Ulys" by Tim Booth (1998). The highlight was a Joycean concert by Japanese musicians, Motoharu Aoyagi (tenor) and Gen Akashi (guitar); they played (1) "Yes! Let Me Like a Soldier Fall," (2) "Silent, Oh Moyle" and (3) "Tutto e Sciolto." (1) & (2) arranged by and (3) composed by Paul Hayes, an Irish composer based in Tokyo. We talked about James Joyce, drinking countless pints of Guinness & Kilkenny and glasses of Jameson until midnight.
