Zurich and Joyce

A Pilgrimage to Joycean Zurich

Zurich is the Swiss city where Joyce and Nora Barnacle lived from 1915 to 1919 and briefly again from December 17, 1940 until his death.  Under the mistaken impression for teaching English job for the Zurich Berlitz School, Joyce and Nora first went there in 1904.  In 1915, because he held a passport issued by the British Empire which were then at war with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Joyce was ordered by the authorities to leave Trieste, and he decided to move to Zurich in neutral Switzerland.  In Zurich he managed to earn their living through private language lessons and financial gifts from the British government and private donors.  He composed much of Ulysses there.
Although the Joyces left Zurich after World War I, he and Nora regularly returned during the 1930s, often to consul doctors about his eye troubles and his daughter Lucia's mental disease.  In December 1940, Joyce returned to Zurich as a refugee, this time fleeing the German occupation of France during World War II.  Soon after his arrival, he became sick and died on January 13, 1941.  Joyce was buried in Fluntern Cemetery near the zoological gardens.
