Dublin, featuring the Chinese aspect of the city 2006

In almost any of the numerous pubs and nightclubs in trendy Temple Bar neighborhood in central Dublin, your neighbor is likely to be an immigrant from China.  Go into a Spar convenience store in Dublin's suburbs, and the clerk is often Chinese.  Now It is not unusual to be spoken to in the Irish streets by friendly Chinese-speaking people.  Recently you have much more choices for Chinese restaurants in Ireland.  As many as 65,000 legal Chinese workers now live in Ireland (2004 census), and more than half of them live in central Dublin.  Mandarin or what they call "Putonghua" is now the city's second language, displacing Irish, Ireland's official tongue.  The influx of Chinese across this island nation illustrates two trends of globalization: the outward spread of Chinese people as well as their foods and goods, and the transformation of Ireland to a nation of immigrants.  However, for a country of only 3.9 million, the figure is huge.
The situation of this sudden influx at the end of twentieth century is similar to that at the end of the nineteenth century when the great wave of Jewish immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe crowded into Dublin and other urban areas of Ireland.
I do hope that Chinese and other immigrants never encounter any serious racist problems as the Jews encountered in Limerick in 1904.
